Drone filming in Tuscany: Val d’Orcia, Siena, Pisa and Chianti

Cypress-lined roads, vineyards and medieval towns: Tuscany is one of the most filmed landscapes in the world. Outside the cities, the rules are often friendlier than you think.

Countryside versus towns

The Tuscan countryside is largely outside drone zones, which makes it ideal for wine estates, villas, weddings and car commercials. Towns are different: in Pisa about 53% of the municipality needs an authorisation from ground level because of the airport, while in Siena and Lucca the share is much smaller (about 7% and 2%), though wider areas are subject to height limits.

For Florence, see our dedicated guide.

What it means for your shoot

  • Rural estates and vineyards: often flyable in the Open category, with the owner’s consent
  • Medieval towns: crowds, events (such as Siena’s Palio) and local ordinances limit flights
  • Pisa and its surroundings: airport zones close to the centre
  • Weddings: guests must never be overflown; we plan safe angles

How long does it take?

Countryside shoots can usually be organised within days. Allow more time for town centres and events.

Shots that work well

  • Cypress roads and rolling hills of Val d’Orcia
  • Vineyards and wine estates in Chianti
  • Medieval towns at sunrise
  • Coastline and islands of the Tuscan archipelago

How we work with foreign crews

We can fly for you with our own crew and drones, or support your team on the ground: location scouting, permits, safety plan and liaison with the Local Police and the Prefecture. Everything is handled in English, with one point of contact.

Need a specific service? See aerial filming in Italy or browse all our drone services in Italy.

Need to fly near an airport? In the red zones near Italian airports only class C5 drones with parachute and flight termination system may fly. We have them in our fleet, request the permits from ENAC and ENAV and always inform the Local Police and the Prefecture.

Flying a drone in Tuscany: FAQ

Can I fly a drone in the Tuscan countryside?

Often yes, within the Open category limits and with the landowner’s consent. Always check D-Flight first: local airfields and protected areas exist.

Can you film weddings in Tuscany?

Yes, safely and legally: we never fly over guests and plan the shots with the venue.

We are a foreign crew with our own drone pilot. Can you help?

Yes. We can fly for you with our crew and equipment, or support your pilot. Operators from other EU/EASA countries flying under a standard scenario must send ENAC a copy of their declaration; those holding an operational authorisation must apply to ENAC for cross-border operations at least 60 days in advance (current fee: €353 plus stamp duty). Pilots from outside the EU need EU certificates: national licences are not recognised. Working with us usually removes all of this.

How fast do you reply?

Within 24 hours, with a proposal and a realistic timeline for permits.
