Drone filming in Milan and on Lake Como

Milan is Italy’s fashion, design and business capital; Lake Como is its most cinematic backdrop. Both are popular with international productions, and both need careful planning.

Milan: a restricted area over the whole city

Milan is a special case: a restricted zone covers the city itself, so according to D-Flight data about 98% of the municipality needs an authorisation from ground level. Linate airport and the Bresso airfield add their own zones. In practice every professional flight in Milan requires an authorisation and close coordination with the authorities.

We have filmed fashion shows, product launches and corporate events in Milan, and supported a 1,000-drone light show above one of its parks.

Lake Como: more space, other rules

Around Como, about 36% of the municipality requires an authorisation from ground level, mostly because of the local airfield and seaplane activity on the lake. Elsewhere on the lake the picture changes town by town: villas are private properties, seaplanes and helicopters use the water, and summer crowds call for careful planning. Filming from a boat is often the best solution.

What it means for your shoot

  • In Milan, plan for an authorisation for every flight
  • Private villas need the owner’s consent to take off from their grounds
  • Summer weekends on the lake are crowded: prefer early mornings and weekdays
  • The Local Police and the Prefecture must always be informed

Shots that work well

  • Milan Cathedral rooftops and the new skyline
  • Fashion and design events
  • Villas and gardens on Lake Como
  • Boats and seaplanes on the lake

How we work with foreign crews

We can fly for you with our own crew and drones, or support your team on the ground: location scouting, permits, safety plan and liaison with the Local Police and the Prefecture. Everything is handled in English, with one point of contact.

Need a specific service? See aerial filming in Italy or browse all our drone services in Italy.

Need to fly near an airport? In the red zones near Italian airports only class C5 drones with parachute and flight termination system may fly. We have them in our fleet, request the permits from ENAC and ENAV and always inform the Local Police and the Prefecture.

Flying a drone in Milan: FAQ

Can you fly a drone in Milan?

Almost the whole city is inside a restricted area, so every flight needs a specific authorisation. We handle the requests.

Can I fly at Lake Como?

It depends on the exact spot: some areas are free, others are restricted. Private villas, seaplanes and crowds must also be considered. We check each location.

We are a foreign crew with our own drone pilot. Can you help?

Yes. We can fly for you with our crew and equipment, or support your pilot. Operators from other EU/EASA countries flying under a standard scenario must send ENAC a copy of their declaration; those holding an operational authorisation must apply to ENAC for cross-border operations at least 60 days in advance (current fee: €353 plus stamp duty). Pilots from outside the EU need EU certificates: national licences are not recognised. Working with us usually removes all of this.

How fast do you reply?

Within 24 hours, with a proposal and a realistic timeline for permits.
