The main restrictions

The two largest cities are surrounded by airports: Catania lies next to Fontanarossa and the Sigonella military air base, while Palermo has both Punta Raisi and Boccadifalco. D-Flight shows that about 52% of the municipality of Palermo needs an authorisation from ground level, about 34% in Catania. Archaeological areas are also protected: the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento is a sensitive zone where flights need authorisation from ground level, and the park’s consent is required.

Etna and the coast

Etna is a special case: volcanic activity can trigger temporary airspace restrictions published by the authorities, and the altitude, ash and wind make it a demanding place to fly. Along the coast the challenges are crowds in summer, ports and marine protected areas.

  • Check temporary restrictions before flying near Etna
  • Archaeological parks require the site manager’s consent
  • Baroque squares are best filmed at dawn, without crowds
  • Boats are ideal for coastline and island shots

How long does it take?

Shoots outside restricted areas can be organised within days. Allow more time for city centres, archaeological parks and military areas.

Shots that work well

  • Baroque towns and their squares
  • Greek temples at golden hour
  • Etna’s slopes and lava fields
  • Islands, coves and fishing harbours

How we work with foreign crews

We can fly for you with our own crew and drones, or support your team on the ground: location scouting, permits, safety plan and liaison with the Local Police and the Prefecture. Everything is handled in English, with one point of contact.

Need a specific service? See aerial filming in Italy or browse all our drone services in Italy.

Need to fly near an airport? In the red zones near Italian airports only class C5 drones with parachute and flight termination system may fly. We have them in our fleet, request the permits from ENAC and ENAV and always inform the Local Police and the Prefecture.

Flying a drone in Sicily: FAQ

Can I fly a drone near Etna?

Sometimes. During eruptions temporary airspace restrictions are common; outside them, altitude, wind and ash make flights demanding. We check the current situation for you.

Can you film the Valley of the Temples?

It is a sensitive zone: you need an airspace authorisation and the consent of the archaeological park. We prepare the requests.

We are a foreign crew with our own drone pilot. Can you help?

Yes. We can fly for you with our crew and equipment, or support your pilot. Operators from other EU/EASA countries flying under a standard scenario must send ENAC a copy of their declaration; those holding an operational authorisation must apply to ENAC for cross-border operations at least 60 days in advance (current fee: €353 plus stamp duty). Pilots from outside the EU need EU certificates: national licences are not recognised. Working with us usually removes all of this.

How fast do you reply?

Within 24 hours, with a proposal and a realistic timeline for permits.
