Drone filming in Florence: permits and practical rules

Florence’s UNESCO centre, the Arno and the Tuscan hills are a dream for aerial filming. The airspace, however, is tightly controlled. Here is what to expect.

Can you fly a drone in Florence?

Florence airport (Peretola) is only a few kilometres from the historic centre, and the city lies inside its controlled airspace. Hospital helipads add further zones. According to D-Flight, about 98% of the municipality is inside a drone geographical zone, and about 42% requires an authorisation even at ground level.

Outside these zones, height limits apply that grow with the distance from the airport (in Florence’s zones they start at 25, 45 or 60 m). Above them, or in the red sectors, an ENAC authorisation is needed.

What it means for your shoot

  • Shots of the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and the centre need an airspace authorisation
  • Crowded squares are filmed early in the morning, without overflying people
  • Museums and gardens need the consent of their management to take off from their grounds
  • The hills around the city (Fiesole, Piazzale Michelangelo side) often offer more freedom

How long does it take?

Allow a few weeks for the historic centre; shoots in the surrounding countryside can often be organised within days.

Shots that work well

  • The Duomo and the terracotta skyline
  • The Arno and its bridges at sunset
  • Villas and gardens on the hills
  • Chianti vineyards just outside the city

How we work with foreign crews

We can fly for you with our own crew and drones, or support your team on the ground: location scouting, permits, safety plan and liaison with the Local Police and the Prefecture. Everything is handled in English, with one point of contact.

Need a specific service? See aerial filming in Italy or browse all our drone services in Italy.

Need to fly near an airport? In the red zones near Italian airports only class C5 drones with parachute and flight termination system may fly. We have them in our fleet, request the permits from ENAC and ENAV and always inform the Local Police and the Prefecture.

Flying a drone in Florence: FAQ

Can tourists fly drones in Florence?

The centre is inside restricted zones linked to the airport and hospitals, so recreational flights are generally not allowed without authorisation.

Can you film the Duomo from the air?

With the right airspace authorisation and safety measures, yes. We assess each request and file it with ENAC.

We are a foreign crew with our own drone pilot. Can you help?

Yes. We can fly for you with our crew and equipment, or support your pilot. Operators from other EU/EASA countries flying under a standard scenario must send ENAC a copy of their declaration; those holding an operational authorisation must apply to ENAC for cross-border operations at least 60 days in advance (current fee: €353 plus stamp duty). Pilots from outside the EU need EU certificates: national licences are not recognised. Working with us usually removes all of this.

How fast do you reply?

Within 24 hours, with a proposal and a realistic timeline for permits.
